* I have been taken to task for including some imaginary castles on this site, but defend myself in that I enjoy inventing castles and their histories. There is a separate web site devoted to these efforts at Imaginary Castles.

History of this Web Site and Other Information, Such as Changing Background Colors

This is the 'newest' version of Grobius Shortling's web page
Castles, Stone Circles, and Ancient Monuments, which was originally posted on the Internet in late 1996. As stated there, every (well, almost every) site mentioned on these pages has been visited by the author and judged from experience. Statements of fact or opinion may be wrong or wrong-headed, but they are honestly given. The castles are grouped by country on separate web pages; there are also some individual places web pages. All photographs were taken by the author, some as early as 1959 (with my Brownie).

The new domain (BritCastles.Com) was set up with too much glitzy Java and Javascript stuff that is distracting and confuses many older browsers, so I have returned to the old (more or less) castles index page. If you want to use the fancy stuff -- and it really does have some great features -- click THIS for FRAMES (unless you are already in that framework). Note: The old Castles site on Tripod can be accessed HERE if for any reason you want to view it.

Some people may find it difficult to read the text against this background. You can change it to one of the following by moving the mouse over the X's, then click the one you like: X X X X X X X

The web site dates back to 1996, which makes it an 'old man' in Internet terms; it also means there has been a lot of cosmetic surgery done on it over the years. What I have tried to do is not impose too much hi-tech junk onto it and still keep its original purpose going. All the enhancements have been designed to improve the site, not screw it up, but that is up to you to judge!

I regret to say that, although this web site has no fancy stuff, it does use some Style Sheet and Javascript things that only work with Internet Explorer. I've looked at it using Netscape, and all of the mouseover highlighting of links, internal pop-up windows, etc. do not work. Sorry about that. On the other hand, the site is still useable and shouldn't crash your browser. There really should be some common Internet compatibilities instead of this spoil-sport competitive nonsense. But if it comes to the point where Microsoft offers better features, regardless of their marketplace arrogance and monopolizing, then one might as well take adavantage of it and use it. Hence, for full utilization of this web site, you should be using MS Explorer v4 or above. -- G.S.
