Bewcastle Cumbria (Cumberland)Map ref:

On the Scottish borderlands above Hadrian's Wall. A real wreck, never a very impressive castle, though four-square, now part of a farmyard. Once, this was on the main route to Glasgow (Dumbarton/Strathclyde) from Carlisle! Was always in a dangerous, nasty area. Little remains of this weakly defended castle in the borderlands, right next to a Roman fort that was also a frontier outpost. A horrible location in Injun Territory.

Very remote and agricultural today -- could never have been anything more. This area north of Hadrian's Wall was called the Bewcastle Waste. But there are remains of a very impressive Celtic Cross in the churchyard. If you enjoy lonely places with crows and cow patties, and do not mind being rained on most of the day, this is a place to visit (if you DO like that, as I do, then go for it).
