Motte

Excavation of the large conical earthwork at Lea Forge,Biddulph, showed that it had been used as a castle mound in the 11th or 12th centuries. It was strengthened in the late 12th century and the dwelling upon it was rebuilt in the 13th century, and probably remained in use until the late 16th century.
